Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take insurance?
I do not directly take insurance, though I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance to request reimbursement. You can clarify with your insurance how they handle out-of-network acupuncture claims.
Choosing to support acupuncture practices through direct payment ensures acupuncturists are compensated appropriately for their clinical experience and allows for specialized treatments that most insurance carriers do not cover.
If you’re experiencing financial hardship, don’t hesitate to request a cost adjustment. I will do my best to help you receive the care you need and can provide additional resources/referrals.
How do I set up an appointment?
I recommend new clients book a free consultation. This helps me understand your needs and helps you determine whether I am the right practitioner for you. From there, we can find the best time to schedule your appointment.
For in-home acupuncture, I provide sessions within a 10-mile radius of zip code 91201. I may make exceptions, but will require an additional travel fee based on the distance.
Coaching is primarily conducted online, though in-person meetings may be requested or encouraged on a case-by-case basis.
All types of services, including community acupuncture pop-up events and other collaborative projects, can be scheduled by contacting (323) 380-2226 or evolve@ginadang.com
How much does a session cost?
The cost of sessions is not listed due to various determinants:
The type of session and number of clients (e.g., acupuncture or coaching, individual or group)
Potential add-ons or special accommodations (e.g., cupping or +/- travel distance)
Requests for adjustments based on financial need
Scheduling a consultation will provide you with the most accurate estimate of cost.
Can acupuncture treat my condition?
Most likely, yes. Two things to consider:
Acupuncture works by supporting the body’s innate healing mechanisms. This means that regardless of the set of symptoms you’re experiencing, my goal is not to get rid of an illness (at least not directly), but rather to encourage your system to regain optimal function and homeostasis, so that it can recover from its current state of dis-ease.
Acupuncture is one modality in a larger system of holistic energy medicine. While some people feel changes with acupuncture alone, others may require additional support. I see the most progress with those open to suggestions and committed to making lifestyle changes.
You can also choose to receive coaching from me for more in-depth guidance on navigating addiction recovery, grief, nutrition, relationships, and other challenges to maintaining health or sustaining outcomes.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Pain thresholds vary widely per person. You may feel a slight prick at the site of insertion, but sometimes you may not feel anything at all. Dullness or heaviness are common sensations associated with “de qi,” which indicates that the point has been stimulated into therapeutic effect. I would not anticipate you would feel prolonged sharpness or nerve-like pain at any point.
If you have a fear of needles, I’ve been told I have a very gentle touch, which I attribute to the influence of Japanese technique on my practice style.
How does acupuncture work?
The way I have come to understand it, our systems are a reflection of a larger set of natural laws that have been studied and approximated through various systems of philosophies and sciences. Daoism and physics are two systems of understanding that can help explain the functioning of our bodies as systems with interconnected internal patterns that reflect external patterns in nature. The techniques of acupuncture and its adjunct modalities are meant to influence shifts of internal patterns towards more easeful ways of being.
The best way to learn about acupuncture (and most things) is to experience it. If you’re interested in more information, additional resources and research are readily available online. In our sessions together, however, I will encourage you to stay present within your body and receptive to experiences outside the thinking mind. The mind can be a powerful tool, and it can also be an obstacle to healing.
How many sessions do I need?
The number and pacing of both acupuncture and coaching sessions will vary for each person’s unique circumstances and history. You will likely feel benefits from acupuncture or coaching by the 2nd or 3rd regular session. Although some people report noticeable changes after one session, results are often cumulative, so sticking to your recommended plan helps maximize your results.
How do I pay you?
Before your scheduled appointment, you will receive an email with a link to create an account on an electronic medical record platform. This is where your records and communications will be stored. Unless we agree to other terms, your account will prompt you to add a credit card on file that will be charged for the services you receive.
Is there anything else I need to know to prepare for my session?
Please fill out the required forms when you create your account. Whether you’re coming in for acupuncture or coaching, please hydrate and eat (at least a snack) before your session. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and other non-prescription substances. Feel free to gather additional information about your health history (e.g., imaging or medications/supplements) that may be helpful for me to know.
There’s no such thing as TMI with me. Come as you are.
